4.3 allowed apps to write to the MicroSD card, as did all prior Android versions. This change means a removal of functionality compared with Android 4.3. It will save your files for at least 30 days, so check on it occassionally to make sure you aren't deleting anything you don't want deleted. When KitKat is installed on such devices, apps are limited to only being able to manipulate files in the built-in storage, with write access to the MicroSD card being severely restricted. On Kitkat, all 3rd -party apps can only write to files and folders that they have created or have taken ownership of. Google made this move to stops apps from dumping files everywhere on the card. In the past I tried setting dropbox up before with other techniques and it started deleting my files on the cloud! So far so good this time around. Actually, Google removed the write access to the external SD card by apps deliberately for security reasons. After tapping the Select SD card button you should be back in the app. In this screenshot you see both Internal storage and the SD card. Tap on the SD card from the list on the left side to display its folder structure. I just left the folder as I originally used in setup C:\Users\ name\Dropbox and it picked up the link just fine and everything is now syncing to the X:\Dropbox card folder set up with the link.Īs I set up Dropbox, I picked a very small folder through selective sync to make sure everything was working correctly. You need to go to the menu and tell the system to show the SD card. Then it said 'Show SD Card' so I clicked that. It says 'Hide SD Card' so I clicked that. 2 JoeHPSDA Well-Known Member Thread Starter Thanks, will try. When I started Dropbox again it said it lost the link to the dropbox folder and needed to relink. From the menu where your pic is touch the three dot menu in upper right. With this syntax mklink /X C:\Users\ name\Dropbox X:\Dropbox it kept telling me that X was an invalid switch so I just removed the /x and it worked like a charm. You need to turn File Access Legacy Mode OFF, then revoke app storage permissions in Android App settings, and then Grant Access again to your music folder in Settings > Music Folders. The syntax in cmd that worked for me on the surface pro was mklink C:\Users\ name\Dropbox X:\Dropbox It's a known Samsung Android 11 upgrade issue. I've been trying to get this to work for MONTHS! So, click 'Edit', and the Security window immediately pops out. This is where you can change read/write permission on the target disk. Navigate to the Security tab, in the middle of the Properties window you'll see 'To change permissions, click Edit'. Android already provides apps with their own secure areas for any sensitive data in the root /data/data// location, so nowhere else should be off-limits to you on a device that YOU own.I tried the other mounting of the card with a link through disk management and it didn't work at all. Right-click on it, and select 'Properties'. And given that you can access everything via USB connection anyway - or just take the SD Card out and read it on a PC - the whole thing seems an utterly pointless, restrictive and user-hostile exercise. It is a complete dog's dinner though, as it's a pretty common occurrence for programs to need to be able to share access to files created/downloaded/modified elsewhere. Lowering the cost of access to space is one of NASAs grand challenges. Access is now considered to be a 'special' permission though, so from the Reddit thread below it seems that any apps that wish to access it have to be specially vetted by Google (and I assume the user will also need to grant specific access permission when installing the app, so you might want to revoke old permissions and start again). NASA Tests New Smart Card Access To Google Apps. Solid Explorer 2.8.8 and above should allow access to the Android/xxx/ folder structure on Android 11.
